Among the many responsibilities parents have today is the need to teach their children how to eat healthy. Lifelong eating habits begin in childhood, and it can be very hard to cut bad habits as an adult. With a rise in childhood obesity and diabetes, it is more important than ever for parents to provide healthy food for their children and to model good eating. One way to instil good habits is by providing healthy, nutritious lunches for children to take to school.
Here are a few ideas on what to pack for lunch:
Pick and mix one tasty option from each of the five core food groups to create a healthy lunchbox every day:
Fruit (e.g. fresh, frozen, pureed and canned in natural juice)
Vegetables, legumes and beans
Milk, yoghurt, cheese and alternatives
Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds, and legumes/beans
Grain (cereal) foods
Plain water
Please avoid sending:
-Cakes, sweets, crisps, chocolate or fizzy drinks!!
These foods make it hard for students to concentrate and give them high and low peaks of energy!
We will be promoting Healthy Lunchbox Week in School from Sunday 29th September- Thursday 3rd October!
Please get involved in educating and encouraging your children to pack a healthy lunchbox!
